Temple Beth Torah, a reform congregation in Melville was founded in 1969 by Jay and Barbara Moelis along with forty other like-minded and motivated families. In the early days when they didn’t have a building, services were held on Fridays at King of Kings Lutheran Church while the religious school met on Saturday mornings. A few years later a small house on Carman Road was bought and the congregation assembled there until construction of their own building was completed in 1976. For many years,Temple Beth Torah and King of Kings Lutheran Church, honoring their old relationship, held a joint service of Thanksgiving that alternated between the two buildings. Interestingly, on that day churchgoers read the scripture from the Old Testament while the temple congregants did the readings from the New Testament!
